Consumers in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are increasingly concerned about overweight and various health issues . Obesity is a growing problem in the UAE and the World Health Organization (WAO) statistics suggest that 20 percent to 30 percent of the people in the Middle East are affected. The emergence of special health conditions, such as diabetes, lactose and gluten intolerance, has triggered a considerable expansion in a new niche market for foods with special health benefits. In the UAE, such products are sold in health food stores or in the health/organic sections of supermarkets, as well as in specialized retail stores. The Food service segment is emerging into the health concept as well, with several restaurant and cafes either dedicated to a certain health concept or providing health food options on their menu .
